Who Benefits from College Pressures - Essay Example Those were: economic pressure, parental pressure, peer pressure and self-induced pressure. For sure, those pressures havenÃ¢â¬â¢t become weaker today. Students differ, yet there have always been those highly motivated ones, doing their best in attempt to satisfy and exceed high academic standards. This group enhances college pressure, spreading it upon the rest of students. Young people all over the country courageously struggle through academic years gritting their teeth and suppressing their natural inclinations. All these sacrifices are done in the name of the golden calf and absurd ideas. However, it stays unclear, who benefits from this race. College pressures do more harm than good. Economic and parental pressures, being interrelated, are the major sources of studentsÃ¢â¬â¢ uneasiness. Today the USA goes through difficult economic conditions. Life is expensive and the competition in the society is as high as it has never been before. It is easy to get frightened about your future. Loving parents dream of the success of their children. They are ready to assist in achieving this success. Certainly, they expect their offspring to be grateful for this assistance, thus placing a heavy burden on the youth striving for freedom and self-realization. The puzzle seems simple: having graduated from a prestigious college and having got a prestigious profession, one finds himself on the top of life (or at least somewhere near it). Education costs ever more, and the young people, who are enrolled, feel an obligation to their parents. Many of them pursue the career chosen by their parents, while their own vocation is rejected as non-beneficial. Abandoned dreams do not disapp ear without leaving a trace. They continue disturbing oneÃ¢â¬â¢s imagination and spirit. As the result, students follow the path chosen by others, feeling deeply unhappy and discontented. They realize that something is wrong but often cannot admit that they are lying to themselves.Ã Ã

Conflict and Communication Skills Reflection Wong Yuen Han Alison Introduction Hong Kong is known as a shopping paradise. Ã¢â¬Å"Service like this just isnÃ¢â¬â¢t good enough in todayÃ¢â¬â¢s standard, this is a popular slang said by Andy Lau used to describe poor service in Hong Kong. Conflict occurs may lead to poor service quality. Conflict is Ã¢â¬Å"an expressed struggle between at least two interdependent parties who perceive incompatible goals, scare rewards and interference from the other parties in achieving their goalsÃ¢â¬ . (Ronald B. Adler 2006; George Rodman 2006) Following is an interpersonal conflict happened recently on me in a cupcake shop. I will analysis what are the possible causes of the conflict and a reflection on my communication skills. Episode I held a Christmas Party at home last year. One week before the Christmas Party was Saturday, I ordered 5 dozens of cupcakes from Natural Chiffon which located in Mong Kok. It required me paying full payment and damage deposit for renting dessert trays. Ã¢â¬Å"Please remember to bring along with this receipt with you return dessert trays. Otherwise, we will not return damage deposit to you.Ã¢â¬ salesperson reminded me after I paid all the payments and received the receipt. There were a crowd of people waiting for buying cupcakes, I left quickly. On the party day, Natural Chiffon sent cupcakes and dessert trays to my home, everyone enjoyed and pleased with those cupcakes. After the party, I wrapped up all the dessert trays and readied to return back to Natural Chiffon. I was not free the day after the party. Therefore, I decided to return the trays two days after the party. Two days after the party, I returned the dessert trays and the salesperson said, Ã¢â¬Å"Sorry, you are late for one day and you will be fined for $50.Ã¢â¬ I was shocked. I tried looking for any regulations posted in Natural Chiffon but there was not any notice posted. There was not any big wordings stated on the receipt that dessert trays should be returned within one day. Perhaps I did not recognize, they wrote the statement in small. However, the salesperson did not remind me that I should return the trays within one day when I was ordering or when they sent the cupcakes and dessert trays to my home. Ã¢â¬Å"Please ask your boss to look into this case.Ã¢â¬ I requested. Ã¢â¬Å"If you have any questions, please contact us through e-mail. According to our company regulation, I should collect $50 for the overdue.Ã¢â¬ said salesperson while she was serving next customer. There were lots of people waiting for and I did not want to argue with him. Therefore, I paid that $50 and le ft the shop. Possible causes There are mainly four possible causes that caused the conflict emerged. Communication Models and Conflict Style When I was making payment, the communication model between salesperson and I was in linear. After the salesperson reminded me to bring back the receipt in order to redeem back damage deposit, I left quickly. Salesperson was the speaker and I was a listener only. There was not any interaction between us as there was a crowd of people. On the day when I returned dessert trays, our communication model had been changed to transactional model. Salesperson required me to make the overdue payment and I asked their boss to look into this case. Both of us were striving for our own interest. We were engaging in the sending and receiving of messages simultaneously. (Barnlund, D.C. 2008) Our conflict did not solve perfectly though our communication was in transactional model. However, we solved our problem by accommodating that is I am not okay, you are okay. Accommodators deal with conflict by giving in, putting the otherÃ¢â¬â¢s needs ahead of their own. Self-sufficiency is low. (Ronald B. Adler 2006; George Rodman 2006) At that time, there were lots of people waiting for buying cupcakes. I did not want to argue with the salesperson and try to maintain harmony and peace. Therefore, I made the overdue payment and left the shop. Our communication model changed from linear to transactional. Although we are at stage of transactional model, we solved our problem by accommodating instead of compromising as the salesperson declined my request. Verbal Communication Verbal communication can express abstract or concrete message in an easier manner. However, if we misinterpret the message, conflict will be caused. Allness thinking is Ã¢â¬Å"the tendency to decide we know everything about something or someone based on limited interactions or perceptionsÃ¢â¬ . (Nicole Allaire 2009) The salesperson reminded me to bring along with the receipt and the damage deposit would be returned. There were lots of people at that moment, may be the salesperson was under pressure and forgot to remind me I should return the trays one day after the party. Therefore, I applied allness thinking that I could return the trays and collect the damage deposit at any time as long as I brought along with the receipt. The salesperson did not give enough information and I did not ask for further information, conflict emerged. Nonverbal communication message meaning are in people Nonverbal communication is communication with gestures instead of words. Nonverbal communication can reveal your truth feeling towards something as it will be emitted without conscious awareness. Sometimes, nonverbal communication may contradict the meaning with verbal communication. When I requested their boss should look into this case, the salesperson was not looking at me and asked me sent an e-mail to their company if I had any questions. Though the salesperson answered me politely, there was no eye contact. Avoiding eye contact can be decoded as untruthful or not respecting to others. From my point of view, I thought the salesperson was not respecting me as I was angry with their unclear statement. From the salesperson point of view, maybe she was very busy with serving the next customer. His intention was to minimize the waiting time of other customer but not trying to disrespect me. Therefore, every gesture can be decoded into different meaning if we are standing at different positions with different feelings. Cultural Influence generation and gender stereotyping People communicate with others may vary from one culture to another. From the outlook of the salesperson, she is a post 90s student. Nowadays, post 90s are symbolized their individualism is very strong. Personal goals are far more important than group goals. The salespersonÃ¢â¬â¢s goal is collect overdue payment from me. She should try to fulfill customerÃ¢â¬â¢s request or do the follow up later but not just asking me send an e-mail to contact with their company. Gender stereotyping in Hong Kong is quite serious. Women should be elegant and keep silenced when they are in any situations. Therefore, I tried to avoid another conflict or argument with the salesperson. After she refused my request, I made the payment and left the shop. However, keeping silence or evading form an issue is not an appropriate way in solving problem. Using wrong communication model, misinterpreting verbal and non-verbal communication, cultural influence and wrong style of solving conflict are the possible cause that the conflict emerged in this case. Self-reflection on communication skills Change our communication model If the communication model between the salesperson and I was initially in transactional model, our conflict may not be occurred. Transactional model required us to be listener and speaker simultaneously. I should not only rely on her reminder but also ask for further information. If I further asked, Ã¢â¬Å"Is there any deadline for returning the dessert trays?Ã¢â¬ Usually most of salesperson will replied with a smile, Ã¢â¬Å"Sorry, I forget to inform you that the trays should be returned the day after we send it to your home. Thank you for reminding me.Ã¢â¬ Then conflict may be avoided. Change our conflict style From my point of view, out conflict style is accommodating. From the salesperson point of view, our conflict style is competing. Though win-win situation is the best, there is limited time to seek a win-win outcome. If the salesperson contacts with their boss to look into our conflict or giving , then our conflict style may be changed to compromising. Sir Karl Popper Sir Karl Popper's intent in "Science: Conjectures and Refutations" from Klemke's Philosophy of Science is to fortify distinctions between the classes (and, we suppose, the quality) of intellectual discourse in his era, distinctions which were far less precise then than they are today. Popper's argument, in essence, maintains that a number of scientific theories are pseudoscientific at best, owing to the "anything goes" nature of their power to explain. The broad acceptance of such theories owes much to the satisfaction derived from their proponents in using them to justify a preferred response, whatever the data or observations truly imply. The argument presented by Popper seems, ironically, to be driven more by sociological factors (and even emotional ones) than any other. The irony here is that these same factors are what drive the disciplines he is striving to refute: Marxist Theory of History, Freudian psychoanalysis, and Adlerian individual psychology. Living in the times when these theories emerged, Popper is well-positioned to guage their impact first-hand, and understand the social dynamics underlying their acceptance and proliferation. It is arguable that the pseudoscience of which Popper writes (based on readings of Kuhn in "The Copernican Revolution") owes something to the philosophically-flavored efforts of the Greeks. Kuhn points out that the ancients tended to de-emphasize mathematical precision in favor of philosophical comfort; that is, the "satisfaction" offered by a theory (or perhaps its elegance) took precedence over more empirical factors. This is certainly true of the cases Popper cites. Marxist theory and psychoanalysis have both offered their advocates a high degree of emotional and aesthetic satisfaction (and one is led to wonder how Freud would have fared among the Greeks). Moreover, there are far greater satisfactions in store for the Marxists and Freudians: there are very positive political and professional consequences to their discourse, leading to a natural preference for the aesthetics of their theories over the empirical. It is easy to wonder if Popper has a similar motivation. Faced with a style of discourse he finds uncomfortable, he undertakes to set those theorists whom he respects (and himself) apart from the pseudoscientific style. Pure empiricism cannot be his motivation, for that is what he is seeking to define, in an age when the definitions were not altogether clear. There is an unquestionable tone of dissatifaction to his essay - his distaste for the pseudoscientists is politely expressed but unmistakeable - and it can be argued that he, too, is seeking to route out the inelegant in a quest for the elegant. Ã¢â¬ËThe Darkness Out ThereÃ¢â¬â¢ by Penelope Lively Jordan Roberts How do people and themes, change throughout the course of the story? Ã¢â¬ËThe Darkness Out ThereÃ¢â¬â¢ combines the authorÃ¢â¬â¢s narration with the thoughts and feelings of Sandra, a girl belonging to the Ã¢â¬ËGood Neighbours ClubÃ¢â¬â¢. She goes to help out an old lady, Mrs. Rutter, with the help of a boy called Kerry. Mrs. Rutter lives in the countryside; next to a wood called Packers End, feared by Sandra because of its supposed supernatural qualities. Mrs. Rutter has a secret, that when told, horrifies the children.This sub story is of the German she found and left to die back when she was a girl in the war. Penelope Lively develops Mrs. Rutters character in many ways, with clues early on to her true self. SandraÃ¢â¬â¢s views on the characters change by the end, as well as her whole out look of life as a result. There are several themes within this short story this paragraph, deals firstly with t he theme of darkness, and light it covers the darkness around us In Packer's End Ã¢â¬Å"It was a rank place, all whippy saplings and brambles and a gully with a dumped mattress and a bedstead and an old fridge.And, somewhere, presumably, the crumbling rusty scraps of metal and cloth and Ã¢â¬ ¦. bones? Ã¢â¬ This evokes a sense of desolation a hostile haunted kind of place, somewhere you don't really want to be, nasty things could happen, this sets the mood of the woods also this was set in the past and the present, at one point the writer graphically describes the trees when the German plane went down, Ã¢â¬Å"The branch shapes to look like faces and clawed handsÃ¢â¬ and Ã¢â¬Å"You couldn't quite see into, the clotted shifting depths of the place. This makes you kind of hold your breath in anticipation wondering what will happen there, you know it is horrible from the descriptive words used. It also tells you of the girl that was possibly sexually assaulted by a knife wielding men so you know now it is definitely are not the place for a young girl to be. The other aspect of Darkness covered in this story is the darkness of badness, evil, human wickedness, vengeance which is never a pretty thing.The dark blot on Mrs Rutter's soul for leaving that poor man to die, obviously drawn out over several days so no doubt a painful, lonely death and he was a mere boy really barely reaching manhood about 20 yrs. old, but she saw it as ok, she Ã¢â¬Å"Licked her lipsÃ¢â¬ she enjoyed the redemption as she signified these injured German pilots as those who in fact killed her own husband.Another key theme is the supernatural, and the mysterious Ã¢â¬ËPackers EndÃ¢â¬â¢ which is often conveyed as the so called Ã¢â¬ËDarkness out thereÃ¢â¬â¢ as her fears change throughout the story. She fears Ã¢â¬Å"German GhostsÃ¢â¬ who are said to in fact haunt Ã¢â¬ËPackers EndÃ¢â¬â¢. But lively changes SandraÃ¢â¬â¢s fears almost in correlation as We, the reader see her g row up. As the story starts she fears Ã¢â¬ËGerman GhostsÃ¢â¬â¢ but as the story develops she then fears a Ã¢â¬Ëknife wielding rapistÃ¢â¬â¢ and this shows the fears of a girl and the fears of then the fears of a woman.Furthermore, a key theme throughout the story is growing up as we see Sandra and Kerry realising the changes there body is going through as Sandra Ã¢â¬Å"her breast popping out her shirtÃ¢â¬ shows the stages of puberty her body is going through as her character becomes more developed mentally so does she physically as she begins to notice the changes happening with her body. Kerry is the same describing his chin Ã¢â¬Å"covered in acneÃ¢â¬ Her opinion of Kerry changes as lively further develops his character as Sandra does not really know Kerry, but she shares her friends' opinion of him, Ã¢â¬Å"Kerry Stevens that none of her lot reckoned much onÃ¢â¬ .But at the end of the story she changes her mind. Kerry seems a bit of a stereotype because he works part -time in a garage, and will have a full-time job there when he leaves school. He identifies Sandra's dad by the make and colour of his car. But however lively suggests clues that suggest Kerry is not as Sandra sees him, for example, he is ready to spend his free time helping old people, and he asks Mrs. Rutter what she wants them to do, then gets on with it steadily. At the end of the story however it is Kerry who takes the initiative, and passes judgement on Mrs. Rutter. In Sandra's eyes he had grown; he had got older and largerÃ¢â¬ ¦ Ã¢â¬ Which furthers the point that Sandra had in fact misjudged, Kerry but this furthermore foreshadows him growing up through the course of the story. Another key point of the story is when he offers her a piece of the Aero bar before he has some himself a subtle message, of which foreshadows the end of the story showing his unselfish nature. One of the ways Mrs. RutterÃ¢â¬â¢s character is portrayed by Penelope Lively is through her environment , both historically and geographically. The house is introduced sending out two different messages. One is that of a quaint homely place.This can be recognized through the descriptions of the china ornaments, Ã¢â¬Å"big-eyed flop-eared rabbits and beribboned kittens and flowery milkmaids and a pair of naked chubby children wearing daisy chainsÃ¢â¬ . Firstly, this gives the impression of a cuddly Ã¢â¬ËgrandmotherÃ¢â¬â¢ figure, but then the picture is broken with the mention of the Ã¢â¬Å"smell of cabbageÃ¢â¬ . This comment conflicts with the otherwise friendly scene to suggest something is not rite. The house reflects Mrs. RutterÃ¢â¬â¢s character. An example of this is Ã¢â¬Å"her eyes investigated quick as miceÃ¢â¬ . Later, the house mirrors this comment by the author describing that it Ã¢â¬Å"smelt of damp and mouseÃ¢â¬ .Animals and flowers are frequently mentioned in the description of the ornaments and her love of plants, Ã¢â¬Å"You should see the wood in spring, wit h all the bluebellsÃ¢â¬ . This constant reference to nature implies there is a link with Mrs. Rutter, for nature is changeable and not always as it seems. There is also evidence to suggest she is an old lady whose mind is still stuck in the past, such as her collection of Ã¢â¬Å"old calendars and pictures torn from magazinesÃ¢â¬ . This could later explain why her memory of the German plane and dying soldier is still vivid as ever. The effect of what Mrs.Rutter says and does also reveals sides of her character. She welcomes Kerry and Sandra into her house. But rite at the beginning there is a contrast in description, Ã¢â¬Å"a creamy smiling pool of a face in which her eyes snapped and dartedÃ¢â¬ sounds friendly and comforting but subliminally uneasy and then later sinister as her character becomes more developed. SheÃ¢â¬â¢s a very judgmental woman. She sends the boy straight away outside to do the manual work and leaves Sandra the light chores indoors. She makes conversation with the girl, but not with Kerry, thinking heÃ¢â¬â¢ll have nothing interesting to say.This is because she doesnÃ¢â¬â¢t think much of his ambitions, smiling falsely while he tells her that he wants to work as a car mechanic. She insults him, Ã¢â¬Å"well, I expect thatÃ¢â¬â¢s good steady money if youÃ¢â¬â¢d nothing special in mind. Sugar? Ã¢â¬ then moves on quickly to a gesture of hospitality, trying to conceal the jibe aimed at Kerry. This is also a key theme throughout the story the ideal of certain roles and pre-conceived stereotypes of what a man or woman should be, Mrs. Rutter upholds very traditional stereotypes. SheÃ¢â¬â¢s patronizing too, with comments like Ã¢â¬Å"YouÃ¢â¬â¢re a little dress maker, too,Ã¢â¬ and Ã¢â¬Å"Chocky? She asks Sandra to offer Kerry a chocolate too, but has already forgotten his name Ã¢â¬Å"Take them out and see if whatÃ¢â¬â¢s-Ã¢â¬Ës-name would like one? Ã¢â¬ showing his insignificance in her mind. One reason why she does this may be because she has no children of her own, so she goes on stereotypical ideas. She also makes the reader feel uneasy, Ã¢â¬Å"Mind your pretty skirt, pull it up a bit, thereÃ¢â¬â¢s only me to see if youÃ¢â¬â¢re showing a bit of bum. Ã¢â¬ This provokes the thought that she has a slightly warped mind. She starts to tell Sandra about her husband who was killed in the war. He died rite at the beginning, and she hasnÃ¢â¬â¢t formed any relationships since.This can make the reader feel a little bit sympathetic towards her. Penelope Lively lets us know what others think of Mrs. Rutter as Kerry builds a profile on her character when he talks with Sandra. He shows his dislike of the woman, Ã¢â¬Å"I donÃ¢â¬â¢t go much on herÃ¢â¬ and Ã¢â¬Å"I dunno. The way she talks and that. Ã¢â¬ Sandra encourages him to feel sorry for her by telling him of her tragedy, but he explains that Ã¢â¬Å"ThereÃ¢â¬â¢s lots of people done thatÃ¢â¬ dismissing the excuse for her peculiar and dis turbing behavior by implying that she wasnÃ¢â¬â¢t the only one to loose somebody in the war.The way Mrs. Rutter always watches Sandra and Ã¢â¬Å"glinting from the cushionsÃ¢â¬ gives an uneasy feel towards her. When Kerry returns inside Mrs. Rutter begins her anecdote. He asks if she saw the plane come down and she chuckles, seeming to delight in the idea. She explains how her and her sister went to investigate the scene and was only going to get help if it was an allied plane. This alarms Kerry. Her twisted side becomes more apparent when she says; Ã¢â¬Å"We cheered, I can tell youÃ¢â¬ as they realized it was German. Sandra is alarmed and quips how awful it was, but Mrs.Rutter, who disregards her discomfort, abruptly interrupts her she is so involved in telling the story. She tries to soften what she is saying by Ã¢â¬Ësugaring the pillÃ¢â¬â¢, for example friendly additives such as Ã¢â¬Å"my duckÃ¢â¬ to unsettling sentences. She refers to the injured man in the broken plane as Ã¢â¬Å"that siteÃ¢â¬ . She mentions nothing about the man himself but just remarks how Ã¢â¬Å"it wasnÃ¢â¬â¢t a pretty siteÃ¢â¬ . She is unmoved when the German was crying Ã¢â¬Å"mutter, mutterÃ¢â¬ . This shows she is a cold, heartless woman. She recollects easily how she left the man in pain because it was raining.This shows she has no feeling of mutual human kindness and doesnÃ¢â¬â¢t feel obliged to help. Again, she is not bothered with the fact he is in his late teens. Which shows her becoming more and more distant from her Ã¢â¬ËgrandmotherÃ¢â¬â¢ stereotype, showing how lively makes the reader question the fact that not all as it in fact seems. Mrs. Rutter is bitter and resentful because of the death of her husband. She delights in the German's death, Ã¢â¬Å"I thought, oh no, you had this coming to you, mate, thereÃ¢â¬â¢s a war on. Ã¢â¬ She seems surprised when Kerry and Sandra suddenly get up to leave, disgusted with her tale.She has no remorse and doe snÃ¢â¬â¢t realize there was anything wrong with what she did, her conscience still not activated all these years later. Rite from the beginning there had been implicit clues to her nasty inner character, not just from the story she told which revealed it explicitly towards the end. Penelope Lively through other means, like metaphors, reveals the character. Like her body, her personality is not clear-cut. The author suggests this when she explains Ã¢â¬Å"she seemed composed of circlesÃ¢â¬ . Introduced as Ã¢â¬Å"a cottage loaf of a womanÃ¢â¬ , gives the misleading impression of a warm, traditional, safe, chunky, old woman.But following this is in fact another metaphor, Ã¢â¬Å"with a face below which chins collapsed one into another,Ã¢â¬ implicitly meaning she had different guises, was false and two- faced. Someone not to be trusted. On balance, it seems that Mrs. Rutter was a twisted old lady, unable to let go of the bitterness she acquired from her husbandÃ¢â¬â¢s killing a nd sick because of the fact she relished in the idea of the young German soldier left to die. Her historical background, the fact she lived through the horrors of war is no excuse.She believes herself to be an innocent old lady; blind to her own faults and separated from the outside world. Penelope Lively used various characterization techniques to skilfully convey the character of Mrs. Rutter well. In conclusion, a reason why the original thought s of Mrs. Rutter were so misleading was because Sandra didnÃ¢â¬â¢t realize her disguise. Ã¢â¬ËThe Darkness Out ThereÃ¢â¬â¢ was a collaboration of 1st and 3rd person text. Unless the audience was very analytical and close readers, they would generally go along with what Sandra was thinking, they wouldnÃ¢â¬â¢t know any better. When Mrs. Rutter is exposed by her evil characteristics the audience learns and was guilty with Sandra.They make the same mistakes of stereotyping as her. As a result, they are more emotionally involved and affected by the moral ending message. The themes and people almost change completely as the fears of Sandra develop from Ã¢â¬ËghostsÃ¢â¬â¢ to in fact the darkest part of peopleÃ¢â¬â¢s souls. Sandra becomes forced to question everything she believes in like Kerry a pre-conceived nobody in her eyes but is in fact a good person who offers her chocolate before in fact himself showing an unselfish nature. Bullying is becoming more and more prevalent in todayÃ¢â¬â¢s society. It is most commonly thought to be found in schools or online, but it is becoming increasing popular in the workplace. Organizations must establish anti-bullying policies to stop this detrimental behavior. Targets of workplace bullying often suffer from a multitude of health problems such as depression and anxiety. In this paper, we will examine the reasons why bullying has become so common in the workplace, the damaging effects, and what can be done to help stop this behavior. Bullying should be considered as a problem for the entire organization, not just an issue for the target. According to the Workplace Bullying Institute (WBI), workplace bullying is repeated, health-harming mistreatment of one or more persons (the targets) by one or more perpetrators (WBI, 2015). Bullying can come in many forms including abusive conduct that is threatening, humiliating, or intimidating. Arguments for and Against Abortion The battle over whether to legalize or ban abortion in the United States has greatly increased in recent years; the moral, ethical and legal had been a continuous fight in our society. The abortion issue is also the most passionate and debatable in the United States to whether allow one to have free will over their body or have the government make that decision. Furthermore, it is one of the leading debates in political races. In this society everyone has a choice and they all have consequences.
